Abstract

Many women experience menopause-related disorders, such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, and psychiatric disorders. Pomegranate contains phytoestrogen, which is an alternative to a hormone that was previously used to ameliorate or treat menopausal symptoms and caused some side effects. Pomegranate has various biological activities, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, and is used in different ways. This review describes the overall efficacy of pomegranate for various menopausal symptoms. The efficacy of pomegranate for menopausal symptoms was identified using studies at in vitro, in vivo, and human levels. Additionally, we discussed the effect of ellagic acid, the active compound of pomegranate, on menopausal symptoms. This can be used as a basis for research on the efficacy of pomegranate for menopausal symptoms. We hereby suggest further research to promote the use of pomegranate as a health functional food material.
